Rachel reading to Flash.
Everyone, meet Flash. Flash is a 500-pound hay-eating donkey who resides just outside of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Spoiler alert: Flash found an unexpected tribe in Rachel Anne and Tom Ridge and family as they returned home one evening after an especially trying work day.
Flash is exactly what the world needs more of. Flash the Donkey represents a lighter and more joyful side of Christianity that is not always represented in Christian literature. There are important facets of our faith that are represented in a myriad of Christian tomes that are just so heavy. At times we need lightness and reprieve in our everyday lives. Important topics are covered by different authors, but they are often weighty topics. These include God’s justice, mercy, wrath, patience. Suffering, sin.
God has a hilarious sense of humour that I love so much, and I love how Rachel captures that in ‘Flash – The Homeless Donkey Who Taught Me about Life, Faith, and Second Chances’.
Rachel had an interesting point in our conversation that you can enjoy listening to on the podcast. Sometimes you read the Bible and nothing leaps out at you on the page. Other times it does, and the Lord gives you clear messages through passages in Scripture. Some verses catch the corner of your eye right away and grow your communion with the Lord.
Other times, God needs to get creative so we actually see Him, and boy does He. Sometimes we need a symbol, if you will, to represent what God wants to teach us in our lives. Sometimes we need a tangible, living, breathing thing to show us what God wants to show us. Our Heavenly Father sends these grace-gifts so that we cannot miss what He is trying to show us. And God sent Flash to Rachel.
Everyone run, don’t walk to pick up this great, happy read. The world could use more happy if you ask me. Cheers!
